The author, my grandfather, was part of the landed gentry of England, and a passionate artist and lover of the hunt. He has extended lyrical passages of description of bucolic English countryside, with captivating, detailed descriptions of scenes that he and friends painted and then sold the paintings, usually to their friends. There are some passages written in the mangled language of the raucous yeomen, which need some de-coding, but add a counter-weight to the even tenor of the times.The narrative drive is gentle, but moves to the charming weddings of the three principal men of the story at the end.
